G-shop Creatives presents: A Journey to Light - Casting Colors, Shadows and Mood at Apik! 2010.

Aside from the usual multimedia/animated backdrop design, I also got a chance to light this spectacular piece for it's “New Edition”. And it was a hell of an experience. Excitement on one hand, frustration on another. If i had another hand, it would be for helplessness... Here is the story.

Teatro Amakan first made use of animated backdrop for Baloy! 2008. I'd like to thank Ed for giving me and the other Amakan Alumni techies the chance to work our (far out) ideas involving multimedia starting with Baloy! But more than that, is for having trust and giving me freedom to do what I thought would work out with the Baloy! Animated Backdrop...

For Apik! 2010, we again worked for an animated backdrop. This would enhance the "fantastic" look of the new Apik! environment, which started from the costumes, hair, body paint and the lights, not to mention the moves, the faces and the sound.

Initial idea was for us to have a projection to cover all the stage backdrop with animation, then Ed thought of creating digital art especially for Apik! 2010. We thought of having the animation on top of his digital art but later decided to keep the digital art by itself.

But we faced some administrative problems regarding the installation of the projector in the Audi, so we had to settle with a small projection size. (This is the frustration hand: I really hate it when people compromise your work with something which is really simple. But this is another story in itself...)

Good thing Ed's work was so marvelous we didn't care if the projection size was 18Ft by 12Ft or 18inches by 12inches..... so, we went on with it...

Now, for the lighting design part...

Early on the mounting of the play, Mona asked me, "Giz, kaya mo mag-lights?" ... that was the kind of question I like answered. In order to know the answer to that, I have to do just that.

As far as experience is concerned, I only had lighted one single play (by UPSHI, "Tinagong Dagat")... and that was a time when all we had was white flood lights at the Audi... Then a year ago, I worked on installing Par64 Led Lights for the ILC AVR Stage. Since I had a little practice at the ILC, I was confident I may be able to handle that....

Some www.onstagelighting.co.uk articles and a couple WYSIWYG tryouts later, we had our planned lighting design for Apik! 2010 on paper.

With Q Solutions filling our hightech requirements, from ParLeds to Movingheads and smoke machines, I thought this is going to be the kind of fantastic show Ed and the other Amakans were hoping. (This was the excitement hand.)

But some technical problems came up. A day before the play was the dress/technical rehearsals. There were delays in setup of the lights so we weren't able to program and test the lighting design with the actual dance during tech run. And we couldn't do anything about it but wait for the technicians to finish. (This is now the helplessness hand, by the way.)

Now, it was playdate, and still, setup wasn't finished. I was only able to start recording the lighting program 1PM. (Showtime was 4PM... ain't that a rush?) With so little time left, I turned to "Oblivious Mode" - indi manapak tawo while working. (Pingping knew when she saw may earplugs on ... hehhe... so she just watched, pro la na sya nagsabad.)

I was able to finish programming 3:45PM... just in time for the Matinee Performance at 4PM. But still, other technical matters were left unattended. Like, our main backdrop projector had a malfunction, our second projector for the house AVP and our videocam was not setup. So we had no projected backdrop for Matinee. That sucks... Sige lang. That's life.

Now it's time for the Gala... The main projector had just been fixed. Some adjustments had to be made right during the show, however, which made it a little "unfantastic"... (including two unintended blackouts... oh no!) But all in all, we had fun.

I would have had a very hard time controlling the lights and projection alone. Mona, Berne and I had to volt-in to pull it off. Bimboy and Julix took care of the video documentation.

At the end, Amakan's Grand Archon seem to like what he saw. Mam Dea, co-founder of Amakan, thought it was great and added NO buts.... (she usually says "It's good.... But! ...)

So, Apik's two shows (which actually were the "technical rehearsals") went on quite fantastically...

Thanks to those who watched and enjoyed. See you next time. :)

Now, here are the sights and sizzles from the New Apik! 2010 courtesy of Amular Photography. Enjoy.

Nagkadto ko sa UPHSI kagina para mag-follow up sg Keyboard@Kape sg ILC. Baw new building for the new year gali sila!

It's not much yet on the outside pero ang sulod ok na. Nami man ang bag-o nga layout. Daw kalapad gani. Although nga, I think, same gyapon ang floor area as the old building. May manugsunod pa nga 2nd floor.

Gin-una lang ang ground floor (principal's office, lib, computer room, avr, kag faculty room), gahulat pa sg additional funds para sa second floor (classrooms).

Here's a glimpse of the new UPHSI building... Ahay daw gulpi man ko nagsenti haw... Nadumduman ko lang ang old nga building where we spent our last 3 years of memories sa UP Hi (the first year being sa Old HS Bldg). Anyway, ari na ang mga kodak, karon mapisngo-pisngo pa ko di... UP Hi alumni, enjoy!

Here's saying THANK YOU to some of our partners in making the play possible and a success.

Due to technical problems during the playdate of RIZAL IS MY PRESIDENT, the intended AVP, acknowledgments, was not able to stream the AUDIO part; only the video has been looped.

can't get enough po talaga. :)... kelan kaya mauulit? hehe.
